Building a referral engine

Most professional work comes from referrals. Make them happen on purpose.

Referrals convert better than any other source because trust is borrowed from someone the buyer knows. But most firms leave referrals to chance. A referral engine is a set of simple, repeated actions that make referrals more likely.

First, deliver an experience worth talking about — on time, clear communication, no surprises. Second, ask at the right moment: when a client expresses happiness. 'I'm glad you're pleased. Who else do you know who's facing something similar?' Be specific about who you help.

Third, build relationships with referral partners — professionals who serve your clients but don't compete: lawyers, bankers, project managers, estate agents. Meet them regularly, refer work to them, and thank every referral, whether or not it becomes a client.

Example — Hypothetical: a partner relationship

An architect meets a property lawyer quarterly for coffee. They share project news. Over a year, the lawyer refers three developers; the architect refers four clients back. Both benefit without any advertising spend.

Try this

List five possible referral partners. Add them to your Contacts and schedule one coffee this month.

Reflect

Who referred your last three clients — and did you thank them properly?
